|| Lilly Pulitzer ~ The First Lady Of Color
It all started with a juice stand in Palm Beach.
Lilly, a young, hip, New York socialite, started selling freshly squeezed juice from a stand in this upscale enclave in Florida. Her business quickly became a hit, but the messy job of squeezing orange, lemon and grapefruits soon took a toll on her clothes. She asked her dressmaker to design a dress that would hide the stains. Her classic shift dress was born.
Soon people at her juice stand became more interested in Lilly's dresses than the juice. Seeing a great opportunity, Lilly had some more dresses made and started to sell them at her stand. Before she knew it, Lilly was selling more dresses then juice and decided to focus on designing and selling, rather than sqeezing and pouring. She got a huge boost when her long time friend Jackie Kennedy began wearing her "Lilly's" and when the first lady was featured in Life magazine wearing her classic shift dress, Lilly Pulitzer quickly became a household name.
Through the sixties and seventies, the Lilly Pulitzer line thrived and sprang up in favorite resorts all over the country. Lilly's pink and green colors became the banner of the preppy lifestyle. In 1984, however, Lilly closed her doors and settled into retirement leaving Lilly devotees to scour flea markets and re-sale shops to find their beloved Lilly's. But 9 years later, the Lilly Pulitzer line was revived and now Lilly Pulitzer is more popular than ever!
The Lilly Pulitzer collections are currently available in 51 retail locations as well as major department stores and upscale specialty stores nationwide.
